What is Denim?

Denim is a very robust cotton fabric that was once produced in the French city of Nîmes. The name ‘denim’ comes from ‘de Nîmes’, which means ‘from Nîmes’. Fashion manufacturers there had already manufactured a cotton fabric (Serge de Nîmes) for workwear in the 16th century, which is considered the forerunner of today's denim. Denim finally became world-famous thanks to blue jeans - initially mainly those made by Levi Strauss.

However, while jeans fabrics can be made from combinations of cotton, wool, linen or hemp, denim fabrics are 100% cotton fabrics that do not use linen or wool fibres. The advantages of denim garments: they are durable, easier to clean than many other clothing fabrics and allow you to create stylish looks and combinations for your outfits – whether on the go, at work or for special occasions.

What do ‘organic denim’ and ‘recycled denim’ mean?

• Organic denim refers to denim fabrics that are made from organically grown cotton. This cultivation takes place without the use of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilisers or genetically modified organisms. This not only protects the environment, but also supports the health of cotton farmers.
• Recycled denim refers to denim fabrics that are made from recycled materials. This can be both industrial and private fabric waste, such as old jeans that are processed into new textiles. Recycling denim not only reduces waste, but also reduces the need for new raw materials, which contributes to a more sustainable fashion industry.

Cleaning Denim Garments

Denim is relatively easy to clean as it is made of cotton. Nevertheless, we would like to give you a few tips on how to care for denim fabrics so that they retain their fit and colours:

• Set the washing temperature to a maximum of 40°C
• Do not use fabric softener for stretch jeans
• Avoid detergents with bleach in them
• Hang denim jeans on a hanger to avoid creases
