What is a skateboard?
Skateboards consist of a flat board (the deck), two trucks (the trucks) that hold two wheels each, and a set of ball bearings that attach the wheels to the trucks. The deck is usually made of several layers of glued maple wood and has a concave shape with a roughened surface (griptape) to ensure a better grip. Skateboards vary in shape, size and flexibility to suit different skate styles and personal preferences.
The skateboard was originally developed in the 1940s by surfers in California who were looking for a way to ‘surf’ on land when the waves weren't playing ball. This simple idea has evolved into a global culture with its own industry, professional scene and even as an Olympic sport.
Skateboards are used for a variety of disciplines, from street and park skating to freestyle, vert and bowl riding. Each discipline requires specific adjustments to the board in terms of size, shape, wheel hardness and truck settings to enable optimum performance.
The secret of skateboard construction
Maple wood is a tried and tested material in the manufacture of skateboard decks. Usually seven layers of wood are glued and pressed with an epoxy resin adhesive. Some manufacturers use an eighth layer to make the decks more stable, stiffer and harder.
Choosing the right skateboard deck
Choosing the right deck is crucial for your performance:
- Material: Usually made of multiple layers of maple wood, our decks offer stability and durability.
- Concave: Choose between low, medium and high concave, depending on which tricks you prefer and how much stability you need.
- Width: Your height, shoe size and preferred riding style determine the ideal width of your skateboard. Our skateboard decks offer a wide selection for every preference.
The right skateboard trucks
Once you have found your deck, you can focus on the trucks . The T-shaped metal pieces are screwed to your deck on one side, the baseplate. On the other side, on the hanger, you mount your wheels on the axle pin. Adjust the dimensions of your trucks to the width of your skateboard. Don't forget to take the height of your trucks into account. If you're unsure about this, our skateboard trucks buyer's guide has lots more information for you.
Hard or soft? We have the perfect skateboard wheels
Size, colour, graphics and degree of hardness - you can buy a wide variety of skateboard wheels at Blue Tomato to suit your preferences. The laws of physics must be observed when choosing the right wheel diameter. Although large wheels are harder to accelerate, they are significantly faster. It all depends on what you want to use your new wheels for. In our Skateboard Wheels Buyer's Guide you will find plenty of information on suitable products.
Fast and smooth - bearings for your skateboard wheels
The best wheels are useless without bearings. The quality of the bearings is specified in ABEC (1-9). It only tells you the precision with which they are produced. Accordingly, an ABEC 5 bearing can turn just as quickly as an ABEC 9 bearing. However, the wear is higher and you will have to invest in new ones sooner. Find out all the important details in our Skateboard Wheels and Bearings Buyer's Guide. You can also find out how to optimally clean your bearings in our Blue World article.
Complete boards and customisation
For beginners, we recommend skateboard completes, which are fully assembled and offer an instant skating experience. Experienced skaters can customise their board with individually selected trucks, wheels and bearings. Our Skateboard Buyer's Guide provides detailed information on how to configure your ideal skateboard.
