Every great brand has an origin story, and Smile + Wave is no exception. The brand was founded by Melbourne-based designer Sam Chin around 2017 while working part-time at a skate shop. Looking for an outlet for her creative energy, she started designing t-shirts – and it didn’t take long for her designs to take off. Now, only a couple of years later, Smile + Wave launches several collections a year, each more successful than the last.

Sam’s passion for fashion didn’t come out of nowhere, though. Growing up, she always had an artistic side and started making clothes from a young age. Inspired by her grandmother, who immigrated from Hong Kong to Australia with six children and minimal resources, Sam saw firsthand the power of resilience and ingenuity. Her grandmother’s ability to create beautiful clothes from limited materials left a lasting impression, shaping the unique aesthetic of Smile + Wave.

Sam never understood why some clothes were only for certain people, so she set out to change that.
