Mons Royale 15 Years Anniversary

Birthdays are a time to celebrate, but also to reflect. This September, Mons Royale goes back to where it all started. Founders Hannah and Hamish Acland share the story behind the brand’s beginnings, revisiting its founding principles and (re)discovering its core-beliefs and values. What began as an idea in Wānaka, New Zealand has become a global movement driven by the love for action, adventure sports and the benefits of merino wool. Celebrate with us and get a unique insight into the brand.

Action and adventure sports are good for the soul

For Mons Royale, action and adventure sports are more than just thrills—they’re the brand’s heartbeat. Mons Royale has been crafting base layers that keep up with the wildest dreams of athletes and adventurers. Whether it’s carving through fresh powder, hitting the trails, or exploring the great outdoors, Mons Royale’s apparel is built for an active lifestyle. But the brand does not only go for the physical pursuit of action and adventure sports. From the dopamine hit of a powder day to the afterglow of a big ride, their apparel is designed to enrich lives, mentally and physically.

The Anatomy of an Idea: From Highland Farms to Global Brand

The story began with Hannah and Hamish Acland, two farm kids from New Zealand who had a vision. Growing up on highland farms, they knew firsthand the value of merino wool. Its breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and temperature control made it the perfect fabric to withstand any weather extremes.

However, in the early 2000s, Hamish, a Kiwi ski bum living out of a ski bag, faced a dilemma: his base layer wasn’t versatile enough for both mountain adventures and post-ski hangs. Woolly base layers were uninspiring, and his cool cotton graphic tees left him shivering faster than you could say, “don’t eat yellow snow.” With a growing concern about oil-based synthetics filling landfills, he knew there had to be a better way—something that aligned with his values and lifestyle.

That’s when the idea struck – why not bring some style to merino wool, making it perfect for both on and off the mountain? And so, in 2009, Mons Royale was born in Wānaka, New Zealand. Hamish’s skiing expertise and Hannah’s design background, combined with their farming roots, have shaped Mons Royale to the brand it is today.

Merino Wool: The Superfibre

Merino wool is the secret sauce behind Mons Royale’s success. Soft and packed with functionality, Merino is a real performance fibre. It breathes, wicks away moisture, and regulates temperature like almost nothing else. And the best part? Thanks to its anti-bacterial properties, merino wool doesn’t smell, even if you do. But it’s not just about performance – Merino wool is natural and biodegradable, fitting perfectly with Mons Royale’s commitment to the people and the environment.

Sustainability: Mons Royale’s Core Value

Mons Royale isn’t just about making great gear; it’s about doing it right. Sustainability has always been at the heart of the brand. In recent years, Mons Royale took this commitment to the next level by earning B-Corp certification, underscoring its dedication to ethical business practices and a positive impact on the planet. The brands mission is simple yet powerful: to create Nature's Performance Apparel that doesn’t harm the planet and to inspire a life of action and adventure.

But now enough of the words. To mark 15 years of adventure, performance, and merino wool, Mons Royale has released a special anniversary video. It’s a whirlwind tour through the brand’s most unforgettable moments, showcasing its evolution and the people who have made it all possible.

As Mons Royale celebrates this incredible milestone, the brand looks forward to the future, ready to push more boundaries where apparel meets outdoor sports. Here’s to 15 more years of adventure, and the performance of merino wool.
